Empowerment OR Enslavement?
Empowerment OR Enslavement? A puzzle to be solved by our Political Office Holders.
My Oxford Dictionary defined Empowerment as, The granting of political, social or economic power to an individual or group. It could also be defined as, The process of supporting another person or persons to discover and claim personal power, according to the same dictionary.
Kudos to the Senator representing Oyo North Senatorial district, Fatai Buhari for his purported empowerment programme and others that have done the same in the past. I give it to them for at least, they did something. But the question is.....Is that much we deserve? No! Is that the much they can do? No! What percentage of the constituency populace benefited from the gift? 0.0000001%, was the right beneficiary targeted? No! Rather, It was based on party and cabal selection.
Have now began to doubt the correctness of my dictionary, since what our political office holders coined as empowerment is nothing close to it, but a total misplacement of priority. It would have been so appropriate if it hits the required targets but reverse is the case. If the beneficiary of sewing machines are Tailors, grinding machines beneficiaries are grinders and the Transformers are benefitted by those communities where they are much needed. I need to be tutored on how one can claim a personal power on something he/she did not have requisite technicality about.
Okada riding business is a very lucrative one , but no parent would pray his ward does it beyond adolescent if at all, so what empowerment is in motorcycle distribution rather than a straight ticket to orthopedic centres? Of what use is a sewing machine to a carpenter or grinding machine to a tailor and vice-versa? It is time politicians be told that, Want becomes a waste if deposited where it is not needed.
It is sacrosanct to note that, One would expect the calibre of Senator Fatai Buhari as the former Chairman of Senate ICT and Cybercrime Committee, and the former Chairman Senate Industry Committee, to
(1) facilitate vocational trainings and empower people with required equipments after the trainings.
(2) Select like hundreds of brilliant students from each towns of the constituency and pay for their WASSCE Or NECO exams.
(3) Use his portfolio to provide employment opportunities for the unemployed youths.
(4) Welcome loan applications from the electorates, scrutinize and grant the genuine ones as very minute as #200,000 or less to boost their respective businesses.
(5) To consult the trade Unions, engage them in jawjaws and assist them with equipments that best describe them, they know themselves better and they can factor the best way to go about it than a common 3rd party.
While I salute him and others that have done same in the past, it's also advised going forward, that they look in the aforestated directions in their future programmes, so that they can actually be scored for the aimed essay and then! The empowerment would seize to be a common gift to pals and cronies but an empowerment in it's real sense.
Let it be reiterated! Enough of stomach infrastructures, we are neither gluttons nor bimbos. We refuse to settle for less, we deserve the best!
